Report on the NEWW Project Summer School, 2024

The Network for Labour-Market Oriented Education in Waste and Water Management (NEWW) Project focuses on addressing the challenges, failures and instability in the labour market in the waste and water management sectors in Rwanda and Ghana. The project is a collaboration between the University of Oldenburg (UOL) in Germany, the University of Ghana (UG) in Ghana, the University of Technology and Arts of Byumba (UTAB) in Rwanda, as well as industry players in the waste and water management sectors in the aforementioned countries. To merge the interests of universities and business partners in the two sectors, the project seeks to facilitate practice-oriented teaching in the field of waste and water management in its African partner universities in order to ensure sustainable partnerships between industry and academia.

The NEWW project is thus based on three pillars:
  • Teaching: By equipping graduates with skills for the labour market. This is to be promoted through the development of practice-oriented modules in waste and water management.
  • Transfer: By strengthening partnership between universities and,
  • Research: By undertaking practice oriented research in waste and water management. waste and water management industry through student internships and the carrying out of annual career promoting events with the purpose of attracting employment from waste and water management companies for students.

The activities of the NEWW Project include: career fairs and summer schools. Following the success of the first summer school held at the University of Technology and Arts of Byumba (UTAB) in Rwanda in February 2024, a second Summer School, on the theme: ‘Building Expertise for Waste and Water Management in Rwanda and Ghana’, was held from 16 - 18 September, 2024 at the 2000 Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda under the organisation of UTAB. The purpose of the summer school as to bridge the practice-oriented gap in waste and water management education through the co-development of an integrated curriculum on the two fields, by experts from industry and academia as well as students. The summer school was attended by participants from University of Oldenburg, University of Technology and Arts of Byumba (UTAB) and University of Ghana. Key among the activities that took place during the Summer School include presentations by industry experts and academia as well as the development and presentation of a Draft Curricullum for Integrated Waste and Water Management by students.
