Your favourite environment-focused Talk Show, ‘You and the Environment’’ has resumed. Hon. Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu (ESQ.), the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was the guest for the Show which aired on Wednesday March 24 and hosted by Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed.
The engaging and interactive discussion was on the topic “State of the Nations address: The environment in perspective” with a focus on how to deal effectively with illegal small scale mining (galamsey). Hon. Kokofu on his part was of the view that beyond the role of government, attitudinal change and patriotism remain key ingredients in finding solutions to the challenges related to mining. He shared the President’s view that as a nation, there is the need to sit and discuss what we want. Issues on air and noise pollution were also highlighted. Hon. Kokofu encouraged media houses to highlight environmental issues in their programming, indicating that media houses with the interest in shaping environmental protection should ensure they secure for themselves the Environmental Assessment Regulation 1999 L1662 that will soon be made available to the public.
The ‘YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT TALK SHOW’ is a collaboration between IESS and Radio Univers. As part of making IESS relevant to national development and to achieve its mandate of improving the environmental conditions in Ghana with the ultimate aim of accelerating development, new avenues were identified to engage the University and the wider Ghanaian community on critical environmental and sanitation issues. Radio Univers 105.7FM is a strategic partner that provides a perfect platform for engaging the public through in-depth discussions with environmental and sanitation professionals, opinion leaders and the public on environment and sanitation issues that are relevant to national development. The Show aims at changing behaviours, opinions and perceptions among the Ghanaian populace about the environment by creating awareness on the role of citizens in waste, environmental and natural resources management issues.
