Participatory theatre and the human and environmental costs of gold mining in Ghana

03 February 2020

The Universities of Ghana and York are undertaking a joint research on the environmental costs of gold mining in Ghana. Funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) via the University of York, the 'Participatory theatre and the mitigation of social and environmental harm: a case study from artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Ghana' project is a collaboration between York’s Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) and the University of Ghana.

Selected community members would create plays based on key concerns and perceptions around the artisanal and small-scale gold mining that poses significant health and environmental risks. Participants and audience would form part of reflections and think-through processes on how the experiences might lead to reduced risks and hazards in future.
