2012 IESS - Effects of Urban Growth on Coastal Wetlands: A Case Study of the Densu Delta Ramsar Site

Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world and provide socio-economic services to majority of people who are vulnerable to poverty. These services, however, are reducing due to population pressure, urban growth and over exploitation. Dodowa is a major peri-urban community close to the Accra Metropolis with increasing population, urbanization and settlements. Lack of access to basic infrastructural facilities including water and sanitation has hampered the development of the community. Dodowa has irregular access to pipe-borne water. As part of the assessment of sanitation conditions and waste management in some selected Basic Schools in Koforidua Municipality, analysis of soil was carried out to detect heavy metal concentrations in the soil near refuse dumps and the playing ground of children in the selected schools.
