IESS receives book donation from Professor James Saku

Assorted books donated by Prof. Saku

Prof. James Saku of Frostburg State University, Maryland, USA has donated books to the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS). The donation which comprise a collection on contemporary geographical, environmental and global human development issues were handed to the Institute in a short ceremony on Wednesday January 15, 2020.

Receiving the books on behalf of the Institute, the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), Prof. Daniel Asiedu expressed his profound gratitude to Prof. Saku for the kind donations and assured him of the good use of the books.

The director of IESS, Prof. Kwasi Appeaning Addo also thanked Professor Saku for the donations indicating that the books were very relevant and beneficial to the faculty and students of IESS and the Department of Geography and Human Resource Development.

Prof. Saku explained that his decision to donate the books followed his interaction with Dr. Jesse Ayivor, a Senior Research Fellow at IESS during the 2019 Congress of American Association of Geographers held in Washington DC.

Prof. Saku holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and currently teaches Geography at the Frostburg State University where he served as the Chair of the Geography Department and presently the Coordinator of the African American Studies Programme. He is a recipient of the Frostburg State University Faculty Achievement Awards in Academic Accomplishment (2001), Teaching (2004) and University and Community Service (2010). He was the 2019 the 2009 recipient of Pennsylvania Geographical Society Distinguished Scholar Award. In 2017, Prof. Saku came to Ghana to teach in the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana as the University of Ghana-Carnegie Diasporan Scholar. He has recently been appointed the Grand Marshall of Graduation at his institution.
