I warmly welcome you to the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS) at the University of Ghana, Legon main campus. The Institute, which is part of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, was established in 2010. The rationale for establishing IESS is to train the next generation of scientists that will have the skill and knowledge to innovatively tackle the environmental and sanitation issues in Ghana and beyond. Hence, exciting graduate programmes equip students with the facts, information, and skills to address environmental issues associated with waste management, mining, coastal erosion, deforestation, climate change, pollution, among others. Our graduate studies hinges on the relationship between society and the environment.
The multidisciplinary nature of our training continue to develop graduates who are well equipped and versatile with the necessary skills to function effectively as researchers; have the competitive edge on the global job market; and ready to take up the challenges in managing the environment sustainably. In addition to the popular and exciting Environmental Science programme, the Institute has introduced two new programmes in 2018. They are the Sustainability Science and Environmental Sanitation programmes. The Sustainability Science programme combines elements of four key disciplines, namely Health, Natural and Social Sciences with Management. The Environmental Sanitation programme deals with issues such as unsafe drinking water, inadequate disposal of human excreta and grey water that result in disease outbreaks such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, malaria, Guinea worm, among others and how they impact the environment.
The Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies aims to meet the nation’s needs for transdisciplinary education, training and research in the Science, Policy and Management of environmental and sanitation processes in the wider African and global context. Our vision is to make a mark as a cutting edge Academic Centre of Excellence for Environmental and Developmental issues within the next ten years. The Institute is collaborating with multi-stakeholders to achieve our goals.
We look forward to warmly welcoming you to the IESS and for an excellent academic experience. Akwaaba!
